MHT03 - Dementia and cognitive illness:

Out of knowledge comes better care and support.

Dementia Training is part of the Mental Health Training.co.uk. MHT has an enviable reputation for the highest quality training and offers a unique range of training solutions that address most areas of cognitive and psychiatric illness.
All course facilitators are psychology-qualified mental health specialists that offer excellent training solutions dedicated to meet the learning objectives of clients, typically in social housing, social care and local government activities.
This training is dedicated to improving the understanding of, and care for, individuals suffering with a range of cognitive and organic illnesses of the brain. The course delivers on the following key areas:

Course Content

  • 1. Aetiology and causes of Dementia
  • 2. Classifying the many different types of Dementia including:
  • Alzheimer's variant;
  • PICKS Disease;
  • Lewy Body variant Dementias;
  • Plus others;

    • 3. Symptoms and progression of illness;
    • 4. A structured study of associated difficulties in communication, movement, cognition and behaviour;
    • 5. Comorbid psychiatric illness, including depression, delirium and psychosis;
    • 6. Comorbid Physical health complications;
    • 7. Learning to manage expectations and improve interactions.

    Learning Objectives

    The delegate will:

    • Understand what Dementia is and the difficulties that will present for the patient;
    • Understand the different types of Dementia and their associated challenges;
    • Understand the stages of Dementia and better manage the associated cognitive and physical difficulties;
    • Be able to help, support and manage effectively someone suffering from Dementia;
    • Recognise other comorbid health presentations.ium and psychosis;

    This training is delivered by a psychologist that specialises in clinical psychology. Courses run for ½ day or full day and are a mixture of lecture, Q&A's, Video, and student interaction.

    At the end of the course each student will receive a 'Dementia Awareness' Certificate. This course is designed to comply with Outcome 12B, Regulation 23(1) Health and Social care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2010
