
MHT04 – Mental Health First Aid:
Mental health first aid is an extension of the concept of first aid. This training focuses on mental health difficulties that manifest in crisis and strife. Many people struggling with mental disorders do not get professional help or experience delay getting professional help.
This workshop focuses on the options available for professional interventions for mental health crises, such as a person feeling suicidal, deliberately harming themselves, having a panic attack or being acutely psychotic, someone with appropriate first aid skills can reduce the risk of the person coming to harm.
What topics will we cover?
A focus on the types of mental health difficulties that typically present in crisis and strife. These include:- Issues relating to Suicidality;
- Major Depression;
- Bipolar Disorder;
- Self injurious behaviour and self neglect;
- Issues relating to substance misuse, both legal and illegal substances;
- Cognitive illness including Dementias;
- Anxiety Disorders including OCD, PTSD and Panic Attacks;
- Some types of Personality Disorders
- Psychosis and Delusional behaviours.
This training workshop will offer an insight into these conditions, the typical problems, presentations and prognosis, the types of medications and interventions that are available. This training also offers a focus on the NICE guidelines and issues covered by The Mental Health Act.
This training is not designed to turn staff into therapists or psychiatrists. It offers a set of skills and knowledge to improve outcome for those who present in strife.
- By the end of this course you should be able to understand issues surrounding the a set of mental health difficulties and conditions that typically present in crisis and strife. The training outcomes include a better understanding of risk, better risk assessments, crisis management skills, knowledge of medications and the responsibilities outlined for NHS bodies within the NICE Guidelines.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will be taught using the aid video media and case studies. It will also include discussions and groupwork. At the end of the course delegates work in groups to diagnose a set of clinical vignettes, to recommend appropriate interventions, to discuss medication issues, Nice Guidelines and multi-agency responsibilities.
