MHT07 – The psychology and pathology of Domestic Violence and risk management

This workshop focuses on the pathology of the perpetrator of intimate partner or violence in the domestic setting. It will address many issues that are not always obvious to the untrained onlooker. The course facilitator is a psychologist that specialises in violent personality disorder who helps delegates to focus on, and understand the psychopathology of the perpetrator and the psychology of the victim. The early stages of childhood development and attachment disorders that later manifests in violence within domestic settings.

This training address the following issues:

A focus on the types of mental health difficulties that typically present in crisis and strife. These include:
  • A clear definition of domestic violence (and violence in general) with clear statistics;
  • Raising delegates awareness and improving the identification of potential of Domestic Violence to assist interventions;
  • The psychology and pathology of domestic violence in relation to perpetrators;
  • A focus on the risk-factors;
  • Examining the impact of Domestic Violence on children;
  • A focus on the barriers to leaving abusive relationships;
  • To provide a directory of potential intervention services to signpost service users towards appropriate support mechanisms;
  • Advice on information sharing and advocacy protocols between agencies;
  • A focus on raising the issues of Domestic Violence with women;
  • A focus on key strategies for communicating with both children and adults in a sensitive manner in relation to Domestic Violence;
  • A focus on working with both children and adults in developing safety plans;
  • Neurobiology of violence and related Personality Disorders in relation to intimate partner violence in the domestic setting;
  • The psychology of the intimate partner violence perpetrator;
  • The psychology of the victim;
  • Attachment disorders in childhood that later manifest in violent behaviour;
  • Violent displacement and the callous assertion of power and control over dependents;
  • The very latest research and new ideas in relation to intimate partner violence;
  • A focus on the legal position and criminality;
  • Body-language / Deception detection (the body-language and emotional leakage of fear and deceit, learning to identify individuals at risk and deception leakage from perpetrators);
  • Basic counselling skills,
