MHT09 - The Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
'Mental capacity' relates to decision making, and this course will give delegates an insight into evaluating 'capacity' and procedures for care when that capacity is in doubt. Applying the principal of 'best interests' throughout and using case scenarios, delegates will understand the importance of individual rights, dignity and respect and adopting a sensitive, personalised approach. This course will be extended to incorporate Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
This training workshop will provide awareness of the Act and its implications to people who work with adults who may lack capacity to make some decisions for themselves. The aim is to ensure that carers have the skills and support they need to act in the best interests of those in their care and to protect themselves by acting in accordance with the law.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
- Describe the 5 core principles of the Act.
- Describe the assessment process for establishing mental capacity.
- Identify key elements of consultation and engagement when establishing a person's best interests.
- Apply the procedures for resolving disputes.
- Identify where their organisation needs to modify its policies to include the provisions of the Act.
- Explain the Code of Practice and how it affects working practices.
