MHT11 – Substance Misuse Awareness:

This is training workshop focuses substance misuse the pharmacology of drugs and their interaction with the brain and affects on behaviour.

Delegates will learn about specific psychoactive substances and learn to recognise the appearance of illicit substances, the associated health problems, the typical influences of substances on behaviour, the risks associated with substance misuse and the relationship between substance misuse and mental illness.

The following topics will be addressed in this workshop:

  • Classification of illicit substances;
  • Prescription medication and its potential misuse;
  • How psychoactive substance interact with the human brain;
  • How substances are administered to the body (routes);
  • The law in relation to substance misuse;
  • Substance misuse and mental health;
  • Appearance and effects of the following commonly abused substances:
    Opiates (Heroin & Morphine), Stimulants (typically cocaine, amphetamine etc), Cannabinoids (Cannabis, Marijuana); Alcohol and other sedative hypnotics; Hallucinogens; plus other substance types not aforementioned.
