MHT13 - An introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy interventions (one day)

This course explores Cognitive-behavioural Therapy (CBT) which has become one of the main models for counselling in recent years. At the heart of CBT lies the idea that the negative and unrealistic ways in which people think about themselves is the root of their emotional and behavioural difficulties. Two aspects of thinking; thoughts and underlying beliefs are particularly relevant to CBT and will be examined.

Learn about how this focused, short-term therapy aims to enable clients to change unhelpful thinking and behaviour. You may also gain greater self-awareness.

This introductory course aims to equip you with a set of foundation CBT skills. It provides an introduction to cognitive therapy covering the theory, principles and applications of CBT.

Intended for non-CBT specialists you do not need any prior knowledge of CBT. Participants will be given a basic understanding of CBT and an introduction to CBT models of low self-esteem, anxiety and depression.

  • Basic principles and theory and the theoretical background;
  • The basic tools and techniques of cbt;
  • Application to common mental health problems; low self esteem, anxiety and depression;
  • Aimed at increasing and understanding the uses of CBT in managing common mental health problems

What topics will we cover?

The programme will include the following:
  • Introduction to the theory behind CBT;
  • Introduction to key concepts (such as automatic thoughts and core beliefs);

  • Identity some key concepts of CBT (e.g. automatic thoughts and core beliefs).
  • Name some of practical techniques used in CBT (e.g. mood logs, Socratic Questioning).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
