MHT14 - Harm Minimisation Training:

This workshop blends the models of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Motivational Interviewing into an application to increase client’s motivation for harm minimisation. There is also a practical focus on reducing the harm associated with maladaptive behaviours.

‘Harm’ is defined as self injurious behaviour, substance misuse and self damaging acts that may result in self abuse, crisis, hospitalisation or use of psychiatric services.

Harm minimisation is defined as a set of interventions designed to help clients manage (minimise) self destructive behaviour with the following key objectives.

  • Improve coping skills
  • Set and achieve personal treatment / life goals
  • Develop personal relapse prevention plan
  • Focus on recovery
  • Decrease crisis and hospitalisations
  • Decrease involvement with criminal justice system
  • Learn to manage medications
  • Develop skills to maintain mental health
  • Improve communication skills
  • Learn to manage anger
  • Build skills to reduce stress
  • Develop skills to improve parenting and family relationships

Delegates will learn technique to increase a person's awareness of the consequences, and risks faced as a result of patterns of substance misuse or self injurious acts.

In doing so, they help develop harm reduction strategies for those who choose to drink to engage in self destructive acts.

The course promotes motivational interviewing and mindfulness. Emphasis will be placed on the development of skills in application of motivational interviewing.

This training event will take place over two days. Delegates will learn about the aetiology of self harm, the biopsychology of substance misuse and other maladaptive coping mechanisms. They will then learn how to apply behavioural interventions in the best interests of the client.
